The foods we eat do not give us the nutrition we need!

We were all taught that if we eat a "well-balanced" diet, we would be healthy. But, as was pointed out on the first page, our diet has changed a lot over the last 50 years or so.

Did you know that according to the USDA you would have to eat up to 75 bowls of spinach grown today to equal the iron in 1 bowl grown in 1948?

Many of us are overweight, yet our bodies are craving more food! That's because a lot of the food we're eating is "empty" calories. Our bodies require vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to fight off infection, sickness, and disease. In fact, the Surgeon General reported in 1988 that 67% of all diseases are diet related!

Actually, there are

Four Major Obstacles to achieving good health

:

  1. Nutrient Deficient Food
  2. Incomplete Digestion of Food
  3. Low Assimilation of Nutrients
  4. Weakened Immune System

Let's focus on these a bit.

#1 Nutrient Deficient Food

1945 was the beginning of a new era in farming. Natural methods that had been used for thousands of years were abandoned to make way for chemical fertilizers. Nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium; the left over ingredients the bombs were made of that helped us win the war, were put on our croplands. There are approximately 90 nutrients that we know of that need to be present in the soil for a food to be healthy. After 50 years of only putting these three chemical fertilizers in the soil, our croplands are depleted.

Take, for example, the iron content in spinach. According to the USDA, we would have to eat 75 bowls of spinach today in order to get the same amount of iron found in one bowl in 1948!

According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, one of the most prestigious journals on nutrition in the United States, 57% of elderly people are undernourished!

#2 Incomplete Digestion of Food

Digestion requires the highest amount of energy by the body. The breaking down and liquifying of the food we eat happens primarily in the stomach. In order for a food to be properly and completely digested, it needs enzymes.

When God designed food , He added the proper amount and type of enzymes that are necessary to digest that food. However, when food is processed and heated over 110 degrees for 3 minutes, all the natural enzymes are destroyed! As a result, we are unable to digest foods properly.

#3 Low Assimilation of Nutrients

Our intestinal tract is the area of our body where life begins. This is where nutrients pass through the intestinal wall, enter the blood stream and are carried to every one of our 59 trillion cells. Good intestinal function is essential to our health and to life itself.

To make this magical process happen, approximately 400 strains of micro-organisms populate the intestinal tract. This delicate balance is upset when antibiotics, chemicals, pesticides, and food preservatives are ingested. There are many other factors that upset the biological balance such as: Stress, birth control pills, and bad eating habits.

According to the National Health Organization, 85% of people in North America have digestive problems!

#4 Weakened Immune System

In the last few years there has been a lot of research on the importance of a healthy immune system. After all, it's our immune system that helps our bodies ward off disease. However, with our ever-increasing exposure to a toxic environment - air pollution, chlorinated drinking water, caustic cleaning products, breathing re-circulated air, etc. - it's extremely difficult for our body to stay ahead of the game. If that's not enough, consider the challenge presented by the nutritionally empty foods we eat. Think about this: the average American ingests his/her weight in food additives each year! And, taking into account that the body stores the toxic waste it cannot eliminate, the relationship between toxicity level, a weakened immune system, and illness begins to make sense. Doesn't it?
